RESEARCH: DEADPOOL OPENING SEQUENCE
http://www.artofthetitle.com/title/deadpool/
Art of the Title Deadpool
Within the opening of Deadpool the audience is shown a slight bit of foreshadowing to show the events to come. Due to Deadpool being a comedy all of the people involved in the production of the film are shown to be presented in funny ways. For example the director is presented as an "Overpaid Tool" and Ryan Reynolds "God's Perfect Idiot". The genre is signalled throughout the violent scenes and gruesome stills. This therefore makes it a Comedy as well as an Action.
Within the credits the production team become joke, the opening credits also do not follow the usual codes and conventions for credits as the production team's names are not shown as if to say that Deadpool himself has written them himself. This is because of the genre being a comedy. This is also because of the fact that Deadpool breaks the fourth wall, this means that Deadpool is aware of the fact that he is being filmed, everyone else on screen is unaware of the fact that they are being filmed. The credits are presented in an interesting and innovative way. They are presented in a montage of his handy work.
Due to Deadpool being a joke superhero or a parody therefore so is the movie. As soon as the opening sequence starts the audience is instantaneously aware of the fact that the movie is going to be a joke, and that the opening sequence is not going to follow the normal codes and conventions. This fits perfectly with Deadpool's humorous and joking nature. This therefore shows that MARVEL are paying homage to the old Deadpool fans through the use of a fake opening sequence and through the use of breaking the fourth wall. Also when the writers are referred to as being 'the real heroes here' is poking at the fact that Deadpool had taken 10 years to even get past the script stage therefore, once again, showing Deadpool as breaking the fourth wall
The producer of Deadpool is Abby Keller, the studios were MARVEL and 20th Century Fox, The movie was directed by Tim Miller.
It is clear that the time period is present day due to the present day clothes and the modern vehicles shown within the opening scene. The outfits for the mercenaries are consistent due to them working for the same employer, however this is makes Deadpool stand out from the crowd- similar to how the movie stands out from other MARVEL movies.
The music that is played contrasts with the scenes that are happening whilst the music is playing, death and gruesome images are shown whilst the relaxing music is played. This once again signifies the abnormal nature of the movie and of Deadpool himself.
The editing is a pivotal part of the opening scene as it is the clearest way in which the opening scene moves from still to still. VFX are used to show the gruesome yet hilarious nature of Deadpool through various stills of gruesome and bloody deaths.
The audience is drawn in through the calming music along with the violent and gory images that Deadpool has killed. The only significant character that is shown in the opening scene is Deadpool. There is also no narrative due to the calming music being played. The main way in which the audience is drawn in is through the use of stunning VFX. Also the opening of Deadpool uses a mixture of comic book action and live action to attract a wide variety of audiences.
Although within the interview it is stated that the opening sequence was a problem due to budgeting but once it was green lit the 'team' focused all their efforts on trying to make it a memorable experience for the audience.
In conclusion, I believe that the opening sequence is one of the most effective that I have seen and it is one of the only opening sequences that relates to the character. The fact that it does not follow codes and conventions of an opening sequence is a fresh take on the film world.
